The Wey Valley Rural Art Project
Opportunites for artists, recent graduates, volunteers, children and Young people
How it all started: comments by project leader Caroline Jackman.
Since the unveiling of the sculpture 'Farm Talk' at a special ceremony given by the Mayor of Guildford in September 2004, Caroline has continued to source public funding to host creative workshops for 5-16 year olds and other creative opportunities for artists.
The following are projects linked to the Wey valley Rural Art Project:
May 2005 Art Competition for local schools based on the theme of farming and the Countryside. Supported by Baker Tilly Guildford. Prize giving presented by Mayor of Guildford at the Private view of the Mixed Spring Exhibition at Tilthams Farm.
June 2005 Creative workshops for 5-16 year olds. Three days of workshops based on the theme of farming and the countryside. Workshops included Mixed Media, Painting & Drawing and Mosaic. Funded by Guildford Borough Council
May - June 2006 Creative workshops for 5-16 year olds. Four days of workshops based on two themes:animals and the gardens. Workshops included Mixed Media, printmaking and Willow & wire sculptures. Funded by Guidlford Borough Council
May - June 2007 Creative workshops for 5-16 year olds. Three days of workshops run by recent art graduates, mentored by professional artists. Workshops included Fun in Theatre, Recycle by Design and Glass Fusion. Funded by Guidlford Borough Council.

2007 saw the start of Recycled by Design, where Caoline and the Wey Valley Rural Art Project was invited by Guildford Borough Council to help coordinate a new project based on the theme: reduce, reuse, recycle.
Proposal.
To work on a project which will focus on Recycling
To involve all aspects of the community
To define the importance of art & design through recycling media
To raise awareness of the importance and value of recycling through education and in creating new work.
Key aims
To promote artists and craftspersons working with recycled material
To involve communities in environmentally friendly art
To inspire schoolchildren and students to experiment with recycled materials
To enhance the environment
To raise awareness of recycled products readily available for the house
Objectives
Host an exhibition at Guildford House Gallery bringing together the best of art, design, community projects, students work and home wares using recycled materials
To continue to raise awareness of the importance of recycling, valuing the our towns and countryside through clearing up our waste.
- For Artists
To create new work in response to the importance of recycling/and or using recycled materials.
- For Schools/Day Centres
For the selected artists to work in partnership with schools or day centres, to run workshops and create work in response to recycling.
- For the community
The project could be Guildford Borough based only with an exhibition to be held at Guildford House Gallery.
If the project developed to County event, the proposal would be to work in partnership with other Surrey Districts/Boroughs, with the possibility of a touring exhibition to the Arc in Caterham, Cranleigh Arts Centre and The Lightbox in Woking.
To offer the public the opportunity to response to the created artists work and the exhibition through a website link and visitors book/survey.
The exhibition will feature
- Artists working with recycled materials
- A school room (competition winners from local schools and colleges
- Community projects
- Industrial design
- Home wares (displayed as a room setting and interactive)
- An innovative and fun method of collecting recyclables
