Paul Smith
Paul Smith's work focuses into distinctively different areas, ideas and working methods overlap and influence all aspects continually. Working in an abstract way on the corrugated pieces frees up his approach to the discipline required for realistic figure painting. The speed, vigour and control needed to paint a stormy sky influences the concentration and restraint required for abstract work, and so on.
Paul wanted to re-investigate the male figure, to make paintings that are sexually optimistic without being necessarily homoerotic, large scale without being heroic or romantic in the C19th. Sense. The extreme cropping and placement of the figures at the edges of the canvas induces a sense of mystery and a desire to know what is happening beyond the picture plane.
